World Youth Skills Day
On July 15 each year, we come together to celebrate World Youth Skills Day. It strives to broaden knowledge about technology, vocational education & training and to develop skills related to local and global economies.
Recognizing the critical role of equipping young people for successful careers, the UN General Assembly established World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) on 15th July in 2014. This day lays emphasis on skill development to maximise employment and quality work for young people and entrepreneurs. The day provides a unique opportunity for dialogue among young people, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, organisations and policy makers. World Youth Skills Day also marked the launch of the Skill India Mission in India.
The day also highlights the vital role of young talent in addressing current and future global challenges. It is learned that Skill India is an initiative of the central government which empowers the youth with essential skills to enable them to be employable and productive at their workplaces.
According to UNESCO, an estimated 70% of the world’s students are affected by school closures at the educational level. A joint survey of TVET institutions by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank reported that distance learning is now the most common method of skill transfer or research with major challenges such as curriculum reform, trainers’ preparation and process of certification.
During COVID-19, more than 1 in 6 young people were rendered unemployed. Today when young people are called upon to support recovery efforts, they must be equipped with the skills to deal effectively with the challenges ahead and therefore be able to adapt to future challenges.
