“Catch the Rain” Campaign at DPS Greater Faridabad

Catch the Rain Campaign: A DPS Greater Faridabad Initiative

Water is one of the most precious resources on our planet, yet it is often taken for granted. Recognizing the critical importance of water conservation, DPS Greater Faridabad is excited to participate in the “Catch the Rain” campaign, an initiative aimed at promoting rainwater harvesting and conservation.

Why “Catch the Rain”?
The “Catch the Rain” campaign encourages everyone to take proactive steps towards conserving rainwater. This initiative, led by the government, aims to spread awareness and involve citizens in rainwater harvesting. By catching the rain, we can replenish groundwater levels, ensure a sustainable water supply, and contribute to a greener planet.

Our Commitment at DPS Greater Faridabad
At DPS Greater Faridabad, we have already taken significant steps to conserve rainwater and educate our students about its importance. Here’s how we contribute:

Rainwater Harvesting Systems

Features & Description
Established Systems: We have two fully functional rainwater harvesting systems set up in 2014-15 and 2015-16, with a third system under process.

Collection Area: The entire roof (8175 sq. meters) of our school building, consisting of Blocks A, B, C, and D, is designed for efficient rainwater collection.

Storage Tank: Rainwater is channeled into a masonry tank with a capacity of 36,000 liters. This system includes pipes and gutters made from inert materials like plastic/fiberglass to maintain water quality.

Maintenance: Our Civil Maintenance Team and Eco Club inspect and clean the storage tank and conveyance systems monthly, ensuring the water remains uncontaminated.

Water Quality: In-line charcoal filters are fitted to ensure the water is of high quality before it percolates into the ground to recharge the groundwater.

Integrating with Academics

Curriculum Connection: The concept of water harvesting is introduced in Class IV and reinforced through middle school (Classes V-VIII), connecting students to water conservation through various activities and discussions.

Practical Use: The harvested water helps raise the groundwater table and is used for watering indoor plants. Science students (Classes VIII-X) conduct experiments to measure water table depth using this feature.

Water Conservation Practices

Facilities: We use water-saving appliances like low-flow faucets and efficient flush tanks in school sanitation facilities.

Leakage Management: Regular checks and prompt repairs of taps, valves, and pipes prevent water loss.

Eco-Friendly Irrigation: We choose plant varieties that require minimal irrigation and water our plants in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Educational Activities: Workshops, activities, and projects are regularly organized to instill the importance of water conservation in students.

Efficient Cleaning: School transport is cleaned using a cloth or sponge and bucket instead of a hose to save water.
