World Press Freedom Day
Every year on 3rd May, we celebrate World Press Freedom Day. It’s a day to remember the basic principles of journalism and honour journalists around the world. A free press allows journalists to work freely, present the truth and hold people in power responsible. This freedom is essential for general public awareness.
This year, the Government of Chile and UNESCO will host the World Press Freedom Day conference in Santiago on the theme – “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis.” On World Press Freedom Day, let’s come together to protect this right of media. We need independent media to ensure that journalists are able to provide us with unbiased information without fear. Together, we can make it possible for them to fulfil their duties in an unrestrictive environment.
History of World Press Freedom Day
The idea to celebrate World Press Freedom Day was first initiated by an African journalist at a UNESCO conference in Namibia in 1991. In December 1993, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to celebrate it on the recommendation of the UNESCO General Assembly.
