Every year on October 16th, the world comes together to observe World Food Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about global hunger and promoting sustainable solutions to food insecurity. This year, the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future” emphasises the fundamental importance of access to adequate and nutritious food as a basic human right.

A Serious Hunger Crisis in India
As we celebrate World Food Day in 2024, it is crucial to reflect on the current state of hunger in India. The 2024 Global Hunger Index (GHI) paints a grim picture, with India scoring 27.3, placing it 105th out of 127 countries. This score categorises India as experiencing a “serious” level of hunger, sharing this unfortunate status with countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to the GHI, factors contributing to this dire situation include rising food prices, economic instability, and the ongoing effects of climate change. Climate change has led to unpredictable weather patterns, affecting crop yields and food production. Additionally, socio-economic disparities in access to food exacerbate the hunger crisis, leaving many families without sufficient nourishment.

In India, child malnutrition remains a significant concern, with millions of children under five suffering from stunting and wasting. Malnutrition not only hampers their physical growth but also affects cognitive development, leading to long-term consequences for their health and productivity.

In line with the theme, we must advocate for policies that ensure food security for all. This involves promoting sustainable agricultural practices, reducing food waste, and increasing investment in rural development.

Sustainable agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, organic farming, and agroforestry, can enhance food production while preserving the environment. By supporting local farmers and encouraging organic farming methods, we can create a more resilient food system.

Reducing Food Waste
Reducing food waste is another critical area of focus. Globally, one-third of all food produced is wasted, amounting to about 1.3 billion tons annually. Implementing efficient supply chain practices and promoting awareness around food preservation can significantly reduce waste.

Investing in Rural Development
Investing in rural development is essential for improving agricultural productivity and food access. Access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure can empower rural communities to thrive, reducing hunger and poverty levels.

On this World Food Day, let us commit to supporting initiatives that strive for a hunger-free world. We can advocate for local food systems, support farmers, and encourage governments to prioritise food rights as a cornerstone of public policy.
