World Blood Donor Day

Every year, World Blood Donor Day is celebrated worldwide on the 14th June. It is observed to create awareness about saving lives through blood donation. Every year, millions of people around the world donate blood and plasma. This is why it is called World Blood Donor Day. There are several reasons why people participate in blood donation drives. First, blood donation helps save the lives of many people affected by various diseases and health conditions. In addition, a blood transfusion allows patients to continue with their treatment, thus giving them a better chance of surviving the disease.

World Blood Donor Day campaign aims to:

  • Highlight the need for a 365-day transfusion period, to ensure a universal, safe and timely blood supply.
  • Educate the community about blood donation and motivate others to donate blood to save lives.
  • Thank blood donors around the world and spread awareness about the need to donate blood regularly.
  • Engage more young people for the blood donation drive and promote good health for all.

History of World Blood Donor Day

In 2004, the World Health Organization first recognized World Blood Donor Day. In 2005, the 58th World Health Assembly declared it an annual global event to create awareness about blood donation. Karl Landsteiner’s birthday is celebrated as World Blood Donor Day. He was an Austrian American immunologist, pathologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in 1930 for the ABO blood group system and modern blood transfusion.

Blood donation is important because …

Not only is blood donation necessary to save thousands of lives, but it also saves the lives of many other people affected by various diseases and helps them fight the myriad diseases. It is also found in a report that people experience many health benefits when they donate blood. Most people who donate blood recover faster from their illnesses and live even longer. Blood donation helps in weight loss, maintaining healthy liver and iron levels and reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.
