“Facts don’t persuade, feelings do; and stories are the best way to get at those feelings with a spice of fantasy added to those facts.”This was the thought behind conducting the workshop on ‘Pedagogical Power of Storytelling’by DPS Greater Faridabad on Saturday, August 6, 2022 for the teachers of classes Pre-Nursery to VIII.
The resource person Dr. Manjit Legha is a seasoned Academic leader, Soft Skills & Leadership trainer, an ardent author & a YouTuber with rich & qualitative experience.
The session started with a ‘warm-up’ story narration by Ms. Manjit Legha which created an ambience of a world of fantasy. We went on to refresh ourselves with the resource person on the importance of storytelling at multiple planes. She emphasized on the need for change in our pedagogy and to reinvent the medium of storytelling in our teaching to match the times with modern tools of technology.
The following facets of storytelling were elaborated by the resource person through various fun-filled activities that kept the teachers engaged and energized throughout.
- Storytelling nurtures- verbal skills, vocabulary, rhythm, rhyme structure, participative and immersive experiences and allows the teacher to enter the lives of students.
- Requisites of storytelling– listen, observe, recall & retell
- Elements of storytelling- Title, plot, characters, sound & innovation
- Pillars of storytelling– hope, belief and faith, truth, love & sharing
- How to adopt the pedagogy of Storytelling in our classrooms?
After that the teachers present were divided into groups to prepare and present a story which could connect to the concepts being taught. The demonstrations by the teachers were entertaining as well as educative. Workshop participants were also encouraged to maintain a storybank that should consist of the stories used by the different subject teachers in their classes.
Such sessions enable the teachers to share ideas and to develop their skills of story-making and storytelling. The participants came away equipped with the tools of storytelling, ready to effectively apply them with their students.
