Interview with Kanishka Tyagi: A Look into Forensic Psychology

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes, experiences, and behaviour in various contexts. It uses methods from biological and social sciences to systematically gather data and organise it into knowledge. Forensic psychology, a branch of psychology, deals with criminal behaviour and legal frameworks. To learn more about this field, I interviewed Kanishka Tyagi, a student of Forensic Psychology at the National Forensic Science University in Gujarat. Below is the interview:

1) What is Forensic Psychology?
Forensic psychology is a specialised field in which psychological principles are applied to activities within the judicial and legal systems. It represents the intersection of legal theory, laws, and judicial procedures with clinical issues, practice, and professional ethics. The broad definition of forensic psychology emphasises the application of research and experimentation in other areas of psychology to legal matters. It is a branch of applied psychology, incorporating aspects and theories from disciplines such as clinical psychology, social psychology, abnormal psychology, neuropsychology, and sociology. Its applications are extensive and can be found in:
# Psychological testing and assessment
# Legal proceedings and deliberation
# Criminal profiling

2) How do Forensic Psychologists work?
Forensic psychologists have several key responsibilities, including:

Observing and interviewing people in the legal system: They assess behavioural, emotional, and psychological issues among individuals in the legal system.

Serving as expert witnesses: Forensic psychologists provide testimony in courtroom trials, drawing from their psychological knowledge to offer recommendations on sentencing, treatment, competency, and the future risk of criminal behaviour.

Providing counselling to victims of crime: They offer support and therapy to those affected by crime.

Supervising interns: Forensic psychologists often mentor interns and must complete supervised practice to receive professional credentials.

3) In which sectors do forensic psychologists work?
Forensic psychologists work in a variety of sectors, including:
# Courts
# Correctional facilities
# Law enforcement agencies
# Mental health institutions
# Private practice
# Research institutions and academia

4) Why did you choose to become a forensic psychologist?
Forensic psychology appeals to many because it combines intellectual stimulation with real-world impact. It offers an opportunity to deeply explore human behaviour within the context of the criminal justice system. Forensic psychologists play a vital role in offender rehabilitation, legal decision-making, and understanding criminal behaviour, which can be very fulfilling.

The portrayal of criminal investigations and psychological profiles in popular crime series and movies also sparks interest in the practical applications of forensic psychology. Additionally, forensic psychology is a growing field, offering dynamic career opportunities. It uniquely blends psychology, law, and criminal justice, making it an attractive career path for those looking for something beyond traditional professions.
