International Sculpture Day
Every year, on the last Saturday in the month of April, the world comes together to celebrate International Sculpture Day. The day is dedicated to increasing awareness and admiration for the three-dimensional art form while also providing a platform for artists to showcase their unique talents.
From the Latin word “sculpere” meaning “to carve,” sculpture came into existence. It uses a wide range of materials to bring the artist’s vision to life. Traditional materials include wood, stone, metal and clay but some artists push the boundaries with ice, dental castles or lego. These objects, their colours, shapes and forms have been carefully selected to get emotions and reactions from viewers.
The creative process itself also varies from artist to artist. They use four basic techniques: engraving, weaving, embroidery and assembly, each leaving its own unique mark on the final product.
History of International Sculpture Day
The International Sculpture Center hosted International Sculpture Day in 2015. The first event featured 50 events across 12 countries. In its second year alone, more than 20 countries hosted more than 200 events. The day continues to grow each year.
Iconic sculptures in history
International Sculpture Day also celebrates the legacy of this art form. Some of the world’s most famous sculptures have stood the test of time, e.g.:
- Great Sphinx of Giza (sculptor unknown)
- Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (by Paul Landowsky)
- Paris Thinkers (by August Rodin)
- Venus de Milo in Paris (by Alexandros of Antioch)
- David in Florence (by Michelangelo)
- Statue of Liberty in New York City (by Frederick August Bartholdi)
Venus de Milo, for example, is believed to be over 2,000 years old.
