Global Day of Parents
The international community has increasingly recognized the important role of families since the 1980s. The General Assembly of United Nations adopted several resolutions and proclaimed the International Year of the Family and the International Day of the Family. Emphasizing the vital role of parents in raising children, Global Day of Parents recognizes that a family has primary responsibility for raising and protecting their children. In order for children to develop their full and harmonious identity, they must grow up in a family environment, an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.
Elected by the General Assembly in 2012, Global Day of Parents provides an opportunity to recognize all parents’ selfless devotion to children and their lifelong sacrifices to strengthen this bond. Families, parents and care takers play an important role in a child’s well-being and development. They provide children and youth with knowledge, love, care, rehabilitation and safety as well as financial security and stability. In line with the spirit of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, family and parental support are increasingly recognized as national social policies and socioeconomic policies aimed at reducing poverty, reducing inequality and parenting and child welfare have been a major part of the day.
Throughout the month of June, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partners will be recommending expert advice and support for parents, from the scientific principles of play to fun activities for the whole family.
