Museums are places where we can find a wide variety of art, culture, history, traditions and historical items. It is a treasure trove of knowledge. It not only enlightens people but also educates them about the art, architecture, culture, history and civilization of our country. Many of the museum’s collections are on display for the public to view. All these features provide information about the lifestyle and creativity of the ancient people. Therefore, museums are also known as historical museums.

Museums offer vibrant learning environments that encourage curiosity, innovation and critical thinking. On International Museum Day 2024, we will celebrate their commitment to science by providing a platform for exploration and the sharing of new ideas. Museums are important places where education and research come together to develop our understanding of the world, be it art history or science and technology. From 2020, International Museum Day supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

International Museum Day 2024: Theme

Since 1977, ICOM organizes the flagship event for the global museum community to celebrate International Museum Day every year on 18^th May.

The main objective of the International Museum Day (IMD) is to make people aware of the concept that museums are an important tool for cultural exchange, cultural development, mutual understanding, harmony and peace among people. Forty years ago, IMD was celebrated for the first time. An increasing number of museums across the world participate in International Museum Day. Some 158 countries and territories sent more than 37,000 museums to participate in the programme last year. The theme for International Museum Day 2024 is “Museums for Education and Research”.

Importance of International Museum Day

International Museum Day fulfils the objectives of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. We will discuss the following goals for 2024.

Goal 4: Quality Education – To ensure inclusive and equitable high-quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Goal 9: Infrastructure, Innovation and Industry: To promote inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurship, develop new ideas and build a strong infrastructure.
