Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day

Every year on 6th August, Hiroshima Day is observed as a solemn act of advocacy for the politics of peace and awareness of the horrific consequences of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima. It was on this day in 1945 that an atomic weapon exploded which resulted in the tragic loss of lives of thousands of people in a short period. The bombing made Hiroshima the first city to suffer such a devastating nuclear attack.

History

Historically, it is known that in 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs named ‘The Little Boy’ and ‘The Fat Man’ on the 6th and 9th August, respectively, on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombing of Hiroshima resulted in the loss of 39 percent of the city’s civilian population.

Importance

The importance of Hiroshima Day lies in its importance for demonstrations against nuclear war in many countries. On this day, people often visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum which houses a collection of debris from the atomic bombs of World War II.
