Earth Day – A day dedicated to our planet

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global event that awakens mankind on the issues concerning the protection of our planet. The event supports action towards our environment and reminds us of our responsibility to protect the earth. The environmental movement of the 1960s gave birth to Earth Day. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970. The event which was attended by 20 million Americans, helped gain support for the environmental act. Since 1990, Earth Day is celebrated across the globe. Today, it’s a huge movement involving a billion participants.

Mission

Earth Day is observed to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for the world. Education, public awareness programme and several other campaigns help create awareness about keeping our planet clean and green. It is a reminder that protecting the earth is everyone’s responsibility. Beyond celebration, Earth Day is a call for action. Key issues addressed by Earth Day are:

Support for earth

Earth Day persuades people to speak up in favour of the earth. From people’s participation to online campaigns, we need to make our voices heard on environmental issues.

Climate change

Creating awareness about human impact on earth and looking for solutions is a key objective of Earth Day. Supporting international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord is one of the ways to initiate an action to make the earth inhabitable.

Forestation

Protecting the earth’s biodiversity is extremely important. Earth Day projects such as planting native trees demonstrate this pledge.

Education

Educating people is the key to environmental growth. Education programmes to protect the earth empower teachers, students and the general public to be responsible towards Earth.

Renewable energy

Earth Day endorses the use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Such initiatives inspire people to switch to renewable sources of energy.

Organic food & agriculture

Sustainable farming practices have become a priority now. Earth Day encourages organic agriculture and creates awareness about the hazards of harmful pesticides.

Upholding green economy

Awards like those offered by Students in Free Enterprise encourage innovation among the people for using recycled materials thereby keeping the earth clean.

At DPS Greater Faridabad, Earth Day transforms classrooms into hubs of environmental action. Our students enthusiastically participate in tree plantation and recycling drives. Several activities on sustainability equip Dipsites with the knowledge required to protect our planet. We educate students on the value of the earth by conducting a cleanliness drive where they understand how to keep our surroundings clean.
