Diwali, often known as the Festival of Lights, symbolises the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Families come together to share love, excitement, laughter, vibrant clothing, beautifully crafted rangolis, and, of course, delicious sweets that leave everyone craving more. While Diwali originated in India, it is celebrated worldwide, with each culture adding its unique twist to the festival.

InNepal, Diwali is called Tihar or Yama Panchak. Tihar is a five-day festival rich with unique customs. The first day, known as Kag Tihar, is dedicated to feeding crows, while the second day, Kukur Tihar, celebrates dogs, worshipped for their loyalty and companionship. The main day centres on Laxmi Puja, where families clean and decorate their homes with diyas to welcome Goddess Laxmi. The festival concludes with Bhai Tika, a day where sisters pray for the long lives of their brothers. Houses are decorated with lights and colourful rangolis, and families gather to sing, dance, and enjoy traditional meals. Tihar not only lights up homes but also hearts, reminding people of the joy of togetherness and life’s blessings. This festival encourages gratitude and appreciation, making it a cherished time in Nepal.

InSri Lanka, Diwali is celebrated enthusiastically by the Tamil Hindu community. Similar to South Indian customs, the celebrations include cleaning homes, lighting oil lamps (diyas), decorating with vibrant rangolis, and setting off fireworks. Families prepare festive sweets and snacks, and temples are illuminated, with offerings like laddus and jalebis made to the deities, especially Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Charity work is also an important part of the celebration, where people donate to the less fortunate as part of their religious duties. Diwali reflects the island’s rich cultural diversity and traditions passed down through generations.

InMalaysia, Diwali is called Hari Diwali and is a public holiday. The Hindu minority in Malaysia celebrates with traditional customs, though the festivities are generally quieter due to the country’s restrictions on fireworks. Temples are adorned with lights, devotees perform pujas, and offerings are made to the gods. Open houses are a common tradition, where families invite friends and neighbours, regardless of religion, to celebrate together, symbolising unity in diversity.

InFiji, where there is a significant Indian population, Diwali is observed as a national public holiday. Celebrations resemble those in India, with homes cleaned and decorated with clay lamps, candles, and rangolis. Communities gather for prayers, and public events feature fireworks and cultural performances. Diwali here fosters unity among the Indo-Fijian population, as people from all backgrounds join in the festivities.

InTrinidad and Tobago, with a large Indo-Caribbean population, Diwali is a national holiday. Celebrations include community prayers, lighting clay lamps, and cultural shows featuring Indian classical music and dance. Temples are filled with devotees, and fireworks brighten the night. The country’s government and media actively promote Diwali, emphasising its cultural and religious significance to the nation.

Diwali is more than just a festival; it’s a heartfelt reminder to cherish our relationships and spread kindness, making the world a brighter place. It beautifully symbolises that light will always overcome darkness, bringing hope, joy, and unity to all who celebrate. Though Diwali may be celebrated differently across religions and countries, the emotions of happiness, joy, and togetherness remain universal.
